The beginning of a Star
Niall singing for his X Factor audition
Niall attended Coláiste Mhuire school, and was a part of the school's choir. He began playing the guitar at the age of 11, and performed across Ireland, including a support act for Lloyd Daniels in Dublin. Niall's singing talent was discovered by his aunt when they were in the car and she thought that the radio was on, but later realized that it was Niall singing. He auditioned for Academy 2 with the song "Baby" by one of his idols, Justin Bieber in 2010. Later in 2010, when he was 16, he also auditioned for the X Factor in Dublin with the song, "So Sick" by Ne-Yo. Of the four judges, Louis Walsh said yes to letting him through, and Cheryl Cole said no. Simon Cowell stated, "You're not as good as you thought you were, but I like you." Leaving the decision up to Katy Perry, who agreed with Cheryl that he needed more time to grow and said that likableness does not sell records, talent does, and he has a seed of it, thus letting him through.
